Social Witness & Restorative Justice Committee
From the beginning God has been moving through creation, bringing forth life and calling it “very good.” Into
such goodness humans were called to be stewards and caretakers. Even so, we live in times that reflect human
failing to fulfill that calling, leading to divisions, injustice and the mistreatment of the natural world and
its inhabitants.
As Coastlands Presbytery we strive to be a diverse people of peace, justice, mercy and compassion, following the
witness of prophets, teachers and the life of Jesus Christ. To fulfill our calling as caretakers and disciples
we seek to manifest God’s desire for all creation through our relationships, ministries, priorities and
expressed vision.
To that end we will draw upon scripture, the reformed tradition, and the witness of those before us to:
- Love God with our whole self, body, mind, spirit and love our neighbors even as we love ourselves
- Identify systemic and institutional practices that have caused or continue to cause harm, and share those
observations with the presbytery
- Identify social justice concerns within the presbytery that need to be addressed and refer concerns to the
Presbytery Council
- Identify social justice concerns in the communities that we serve
- Boldly, courageous and lovingly commit to working for the liberation, wholeness and fullness of life for
people and planet
- Identify and support practical ways individuals and congregations can bear witness to social concerns and
work for justice
- Create opportunities within the presbytery to become more informed and learn to be more effective in their
own social witness
- Strategically and collaboratively work with other faith traditions and non-profits with mutuality and
respect toward common shared goals
- Engage the presbytery through its congregations, Teaching and Ruling Elders and committees toward deeper
education, action and transformation
- Remain open to the leading of the Holy Spirit
- Embody the call to be peacemakers, healers of the breach, restorers of the streets
The SW&RJ Committee consists of 7 - 9 members, and should have an odd number of members. One is appointed by
the Council. The rest are elected by the Presbytery. It is not necessary to be a Teaching or Ruling Elder to be
a member of this committee. Every effort is made to include voices from the BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ communities.
